CodaScan can accept a Shopify order number manually, but a scannable packing slip is faster and reduces typing mistakes at a busy packing station. Shopify packing slips are Liquid templates, so the printed order name can also be rendered as a QR code or barcode without introducing a second warehouse identifier.
Packing slip or shipping label?
Use the document that contains the Shopify order name. In many operations that is the packing slip or pick list. A carrier shipping label usually emphasizes the tracking number, which is not necessarily the Shopify order number that the provider uses for matching.
The scan should return the same order name that a colleague sees in Shopify Admin. Avoid creating a separate photo-only code unless there is a strong operational reason, because every extra identifier creates another mapping to maintain.
Recommended option: add a QR code
- 01
Open the packing slip template
In Shopify Admin, go to Settings, Shipping and delivery, then open the packing slip template in the Documents section.
- 02
Find the order name
Locate the Liquid variable that prints the order name in the template. Keep the human-readable number visible beside the code.
- 03
Add the QR image
Render the order name without the # symbol in a QR-code image URL and place it near the printed order number.
- 04
Preview, save, and print
Preview the template, save it, and print one real packing slip from a test order.
- 05
Scan with CodaScan
Confirm that the scanned value matches the order shown in Shopify and opens a new capture record.
When a Code 39 barcode makes sense
A linear barcode can suit stations that already use dedicated barcode scanners or where staff are more familiar with Code 39. It requires a compatible font or rendered barcode asset, and the printed size and contrast need more careful testing than a QR code.
Shopify supports editing packing slips with HTML, CSS, and Liquid. If a CSS font file is used, upload it to Shopify Files and reference the hosted file from the template. Keep the order number printed as text so staff can fall back to manual entry.
Rollout checklist
- Test both short and long order numbers.
- Print on the same printer, paper, scale, and quality used in production.
- Scan from the normal working distance and lighting conditions.
- Confirm that #1042 and 1042 resolve to the same Shopify order in the selected configuration.
- Train staff to type the visible order number when the printed code is damaged.
- Keep a copy of the previous packing slip template before making changes.
Pair the phone before the first live scan
The printed code identifies the order; it does not authorize the device. Install CodaScan in the Shopify store, generate a pairing QR code or pairing code, and connect the licensed phone from CodaScan Settings. Then save or select the Shopify provider configuration for that store.
Frequently asked questions
Does CodaScan require a QR code on the packing slip?
No. Staff can scan a compatible barcode or enter the Shopify order number manually. A QR code is recommended because it is quick to add and easy for a phone camera to read.
Should the QR code contain the tracking number?
No. The Shopify provider matches the Shopify order name. Use the order number shown in Shopify Admin rather than the carrier tracking number.
What if the code prints poorly?
Keep the human-readable order number beside the code. The operator can enter that number manually and continue the same capture workflow.
